Kattre's Korner
Learning together. Growing together.
As many of you know, three months have passed since I last posted pictures or given much for an update on the blog. To be honest with you all, I've been focusing the last three months finishing up my first term of grad school, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy at school learning. This Spring Break is just the time I needed to get thing caught up on Kattre's Korner up-to-date. I've seen that many of you still continually check in to see if I've posted, so thank you for your support and involvement! Without further ado, here are some moments from the last three months!!! Enjoy! The first group of pictures is way back from January 3rd. We were taking pictures with our new Mermaid Pillows and bracelets that Platteville PTO funded for us. The pictures were used on a thank you card. The kids are loving having them in the room!! These next pictures are from January 10th when our 2nd graders were practicing mindfulness and calming yoga poses to get us ready to do math lesson. Sometimes, all the natural energy of an 8 year old needs to be redirected and refocused before starting a lesson! January 26th, Mrs. Temperly's class invited us over to do a Quizlet activity where we teamed up with her class to complete a quiz together. The idea of Quizlet is that the group has to answer a question with one of the many given answers each group member has. Each student has to decide if one of their choices is the potential correct answer. If someone doesn't have the correct answer amongst their options, they don't select anything. If someone has it, they can select it and get the group a point. If someone selects an answer and it is incorrect, the group starts back over with zero points. It's an amazing, team-building, cooperative activity. Thank you for the fun, Mrs. Temperly!! By the amount of involvement from many parents, I know that you guys already know about the SeeSaw app that we have been dabbling into. The class was INCREDIBLY quick to figure out the first assignment and all that the site offers. Stay tuned for more SeeSaw activities! If you haven't signed up to follow your child or have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me for more information!! :) To end our Fables unit, the students did some skits (or reader's theater as we call it) to perform in front of our own class. We did different fables, such as The Lion and the Mouse, The Rabbit and the Hare, The Dog and His Bone, The City Mouse and Country Mouse, The Rat and the Elephant, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Fox and the Crow, and The Ant and the Grasshopper. (Soon to come) Click the links to see the kids performing. We also went to the cafeteria and watched Mrs. Droessler's class perform Anansi the Spider and Mrs. Temperly's class perform The Fox and the Crow. Our next adventure came in the month of February with Black History Month. We read about a boy named Henry, who hid in a box to escape slavery. We talked about what that must have been like to stay in a box, quietly, for such a long period of time. To give them an idea of this situation, I had the students pretend as if they were sitting inside of a box, without talking or moving so they wouldn't get 'caught'. If someone made a noise, laughed, or even (accidentally) sneezed, they were out, because that would have given Henry away when he was hiding. I even tipped some of them over (not pictured) to show how the boxed got moved around on the ship, and the students had to stay in their position to continue the game. They got a kick out of it and I think it helped make a deeper connection to what Henry went through. To end our unit on Long Ago and Today, we had Mrs. Huck come from the Mining Museum to show us toys from long ago. The kids were very intrigued by the toys. It was interested for them to see toys that were just older versions of toys they have today (roller skates) and others that were completely different than anything they've seen. They followed this activity by writing about what their favorite toy was in our opinion writing time. We will upload these to their SeeSaw account so you can see their amazing work!! Another important person we learned about during Black History Month was Ruby Bridges. The students seemed very connected to Ruby because she was not much younger than them at the time that she greatly impacted our society. Here, students are partner reading about Ruby and learning that she was the first African American to attend an all-white school. In math we are learning about different ways to organize data, such as bar graphs, tally charts, picture graphs, etc. Right before Spring Break, the class got a cup of jelly beans and had to graph which colors they got in their cup. Thank you for being so patient with me as we work through this school year. You all have been a great support system. Enjoy your week back to normalcy!!
