As part of our new mission to save lives through UNICEF, we've been very active on their website doing fitness video brain breaks. Check out this video (click the link) to see what that looks like! As part of Wednesday math centers, the kids get to explore with geo boards. This is what Zimo and Symir surprised me with. 'Ms Kattre' and 'Love'. :) We also got to celebrate our good behavior with a PJ and movie day. Last week we got to do one of my favorite science lessons where we 'make soup' but accidentally add an ingredient too early and need to seperate the soup mix in order to fix it. (It takes every bit of my 'acting' abilities to not crack a smile with their panic-struck reactions, but I am able to convince the kids that we have made a huge mistake and MUST fix it for the soup to turn out.) Within the soup mix there are lima beans, pinto beans, mung beans, rice, and corn meal. The kids worked SO well together and were super excited to come up with the idea of using screens to sort out the different sized particles of solids. Here are some pictures of the kids working within their groups. You can tell in the 'after' pictures that they are VERY proud that they were able to seperate them out. A little over 2 years ago, I met another teacher and we struck up conversation about her step-counting wristband. I knew it was probably some version of a FitBit or something like it, but I asked about it anyway. Come to find out, it was a UNICEF Kid Power Band. After some deep conversation due to my intense curiosity, I had a spark ignited within me to do the same program with my own students.
A few bumps in the road, and some let-downs stood in the way of it happening. Finally, in September, I reached out to UNICEF directly to beg for ideas on how to make this possible for my class. Their suggestion: wait patiently until Donor's Choose pairs with UNICEF to do a donation match. Wait patiently? While I have this fire inside to make an impact and a difference the lives of my students and the lives of malnourished children? What other choice did I have? (Other than forking out $900 of my own.) So I waited until I got the go-ahead that the donation match was a 'go'. A couple late nights and MANY emails with Selena from UNICEF, and I now have a published fundraiser campaign that is live for our class to get these bracelets. The best part about the timing of this fundraiser is that donations are matched (while funds last). For every dollar donated, UNICEF donates another dollar. As of now, I am only $425 from reaching my goal, which would allow me to bring these bracelets to the students in my class and, in turn, save lives. For more information on the bracelets, visit https://www.unicefusa.org/stories/unicef-kid-power-how-it-works-what-it-does-%E2%80%94-kids-helping-kids/32234 To look at or donate to my campaign, visit: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/moving-our-bodies-to-save-lives-unicef/3629143/?rf=facebook-dc-2018-10-tpc_complete-teacher_4464083&challengeid=20938194&fbclid=IwAR2naM_jppuMAM0KkMTTtaZ0tlxcqbjALxxNri5M9lXt2mw757dRMYl5258&utm_source=dc&utm_medium=page&utm_campaign=project&utm_term=teacher_4464083 Have a great weekend everyone!! Here are a few new things we've been doing in our classroom lately. We've started doing UNICEF's Kid Power Up videos (brain break/exercises). For every 10 videos that we complete, we earn a food packet to be sent to a malnourished child in the world. The kids have always loved GoNoodle and any brain breaks, but with this incentive of helping someone, they are VERY motivated. The next new thing was our Wednesday math centers. The kids will have 10 games/activities that help them practice math strategies key to their success in math. Each week on Wednesday, the kids will get to go to 2 of them. They work very hard while they are there and play really well together! In addition to fun things in our classroom, we've been venturing out to visiting things in our community. Here are some pictures of the homecoming parade. Ana and Zimo did an amazing job of carrying our banner!! And lastly, we got a GORGEOUS day to walk to the new and beautiful public library. While there, we learned about the Caldecott Medal on books and even listened to the book Jumanji. While there, we checked out 2 books and took some pictures in the beautiful colored glass windows that overlook Main Street of Platteville! I will send out another reminder, but please return these by November 6th. If you cannot make it back to the library by then, I would be happy to return them for you. Send me a message, send the books to school, and I will make a trip to drop them off. Have a great night, everyone!
